What Signs Are Required for Warehouse Racking? (Including F8 Load Notices)

Warehouse racking systems are classed as work equipment under UK law. That means they must be used safely, inspected regularly, and clearly marked with load limits. One of the most common failures seen in UK warehouses isn’t poor steel — it’s poor control. And missing signage is a big part of that.

If you operate, inspect, or supply pallet racking, this guide explains the signage typically required — including industry-standard F8 load notices.

What Law Covers Racking Signage?

Warehouse racking falls under:

• Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974
• Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER)
• Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992

Under PUWER, employers must ensure work equipment:

• Is suitable
• Is maintained
• Is inspected
• Is used within safe limits

Displaying load capacity signage is part of demonstrating those limits are clearly communicated.

1. F8 Racking Load Notice Signs (Safe Working Load Signs)

The most important sign on any racking installation is the load notice, commonly referred to in the UK as an F8 sign.

The format is widely recognised within the storage equipment industry and commonly used by inspectors associated with the Storage Equipment Manufacturers' Association (SEMA).

An F8 racking sign typically displays:

• Maximum bay load
• Maximum beam level load
• Frame load limit
• Installation reference
• Installer or manufacturer details
• Date of installation

These signs should be:

• Fixed to the end frame of each racking run
• Clearly visible from aisle level
• Updated if the configuration changes

While legislation does not specifically name “F8 signs,” inspectors expect safe working load information to be clearly displayed. Missing load notices are a common compliance issue.

2. Racking Inspection Signs & Status Labels

Racking must be:

• Regularly inspected in-house by a competent person
• Formally inspected at least annually

Inspection signage or labels help confirm:

• Date of last inspection
• Next inspection due
• Current condition status

Clear inspection identification supports audit readiness and demonstrates active management.

3. Forklift & Vehicle Warning Signs

Vehicle impact is one of the leading causes of racking damage. Where forklifts operate, warning signage is typically required to control:

• Pedestrian risk
• Vehicle movement
• Shared aisle hazards

This supports compliance with general workplace safety regulations and reduces upright damage risk.

4. Prohibition Signs – No Climbing / Do Not Alter Racking

Racking systems are engineered structures. They should not be:

• Climbed
• Modified without recalculation
• Adjusted by unauthorised staff

Prohibition signage reinforces site rules and reduces unsafe behaviour.

5. Aisle Marking & Impact Protection Identification

Although not strictly signs, clear aisle marking and upright protection identification are best practice in high-traffic warehouse environments. They help prevent collisions and support safe traffic management.

Are F8 Load Notices Legally Required?

The law does not state “you must display an F8 sign.” However, under PUWER and general duty of care principles, employers must ensure equipment is used within safe limits. If load limits are not clearly displayed:

• Staff cannot verify capacity
• Overloading risk increases
• Compliance becomes difficult to demonstrate

In practice, visible load notices are considered an essential control measure.

Who Should Be Installing Racking Signage?

Warehouse Operators: If you manage a warehouse, you are responsible for ensuring racking is:

• Clearly marked with load limits
• Regularly inspected
• Protected from vehicle damage

Missing signage is a simple issue to correct — and one that can prevent serious incidents.

Safety Consultants & Resellers: If you provide inspections or safety services, supplying or recommending:

• F8 load notice signs
• Inspection signage
• Vehicle warning signs
• Prohibition signage

adds tangible value to your compliance advice. Standardised signage across sites also improves audit consistency.

Racking Signage Checklist

Most UK warehouse environments should have:

• F8 load notice on every racking run
• Inspection status signage
• Forklift warning signs
• Pedestrian hazard signage
• No climbing / do not alter signs
• Clear aisle marking

Final Thoughts

Racking signage isn’t decorative. It forms part of your safe system of work. F8 racking load notices, in particular, are one of the simplest and most important controls in warehouse safety management.

Whether you operate a warehouse directly or support clients through inspection and consultancy, ensuring the correct signage is in place strengthens compliance and reduces risk.

Important Information

This guide is provided for general information only. Rainbow Safety supplies safety signage but does not provide safety, fire safety, fire risk assessment, legal or compliance advice. Nothing in this guide should be relied upon as professional advice or as confirmation that particular signage is suitable or sufficient for a specific workplace, premises or situation.

Safety signage requirements will vary depending on the workplace, premises, activities, hazards and the findings of any relevant risk assessment. The responsible person, employer or dutyholder should ensure that appropriate risk assessments are carried out and should seek advice from a competent safety professional where necessary.

Applicable legislation, standards and official guidance should always be checked when determining the safety measures and signage required for a particular workplace or premises.
