Building safety signage plays a vital role in protecting employees, visitors, contractors and members of the public. From identifying fire exits and first aid facilities to warning of hazards and restricting access to dangerous areas, safety signs provide clear instructions that help people stay safe and respond appropriately in an emergency.

Whether you manage an office, warehouse, school, healthcare facility, retail premises or residential building, effective safety signage is an essential part of creating a safe and well-organised environment.

What Is Building Safety Signage?

Building safety signage refers to the collection of signs used throughout a building to communicate health and safety information. These signs help people identify hazards, locate emergency equipment, follow evacuation routes and understand important workplace instructions.

They are designed to communicate information quickly using recognised colours, symbols and concise wording.

Why Is Building Safety Signage Important?

Clear safety signage helps reduce accidents, improve emergency response and support the safe management of a building. It provides visual reminders of hazards and procedures, helping occupants make informed decisions in both everyday situations and emergencies.

Effective building safety signage can:

• Improve workplace safety
• Support fire evacuation procedures
• Reduce confusion during emergencies
• Help visitors navigate unfamiliar buildings
• Identify emergency equipment and facilities
• Promote safe working practices
• Support building management and organisation

Main Types Of Building Safety Signs

Fire Safety Signs

Fire safety signs identify fire exits, fire alarm call points, fire extinguishers, fire action notices, fire doors and other firefighting equipment. They help people respond quickly and safely if a fire occurs.

Common examples include:

• Fire Exit signs
• Fire Action notices
• Fire Extinguisher signs
• Fire Alarm Call Point signs
• Fire Door Keep Shut signs
• Fire Assembly Point signs

Warning Signs

Warning signs alert people to hazards that could cause injury or damage. They are usually yellow with black symbols or text.

Examples include:

• Warning High Voltage
• Caution Slippery Surface
• Forklift Trucks Operating
• Fragile Roof
• Hazardous Chemicals

Mandatory Signs

Mandatory signs tell people what they must do to remain safe. They are normally blue with white symbols or text.

Typical examples include:

• Wear Safety Helmet
• Eye Protection Must Be Worn
• Hearing Protection Must Be Worn
• Wear Safety Footwear
• Use Handrail

Prohibition Signs

Prohibition signs indicate actions that are not allowed. They are usually white with a red border and diagonal bar.

Examples include:

• No Smoking
• No Entry
• No Unauthorised Access
• No Mobile Phones
• Do Not Obstruct

Safe Condition Signs

Safe condition signs provide information about emergency facilities and safe routes. They are normally green with white text or symbols.

Common examples include:

• First Aid
• Emergency Exit
• Fire Assembly Point
• Emergency Shower
• Emergency Telephone

Where Should Building Safety Signs Be Installed?

Safety signs should be positioned where they provide the greatest benefit. They should be installed before people reach a hazard, decision point or emergency facility.

Typical locations include:

• Building entrances
• Reception areas
• Escape routes and corridors
• Fire exits
• Stairwells
• Plant rooms
• Warehouses
• Loading bays
• Staff facilities
• Car parks and external areas

Choosing The Right Sign Material

The environment where the sign will be installed should influence the material you choose.

• Self adhesive vinyl: Suitable for smooth indoor surfaces.
• Rigid plastic PVC: Durable and ideal for general workplace use.
• Foamex PVC: Suitable for larger indoor displays.
• Aluminium composite: Excellent for long-term outdoor signage.
• Brushed aluminium effect: Provides a premium finish for offices and reception areas.
• Photoluminescent material: Ideal for emergency escape and fire safety signs.

Keep Signs Clear And Consistent

Building safety signs should use clear wording, recognised symbols and consistent colours throughout the premises. Avoid displaying conflicting information or placing too many signs together, as this can make important messages harder to notice.

Good signage should be easy to understand at a glance.

Maintaining Building Safety Signage

Safety signs should be inspected regularly to ensure they remain clean, legible and securely fixed. Replace signs that become damaged, faded or outdated.

If the building layout, fire procedures or workplace hazards change, review the signage to ensure it still provides accurate guidance.

Common Building Safety Signage Mistakes

• Using signs that are too small to read
• Allowing furniture or equipment to block signs
• Using the wrong type of sign for the hazard
• Failing to update signs after building alterations
• Leaving damaged or faded signs in place
• Installing too many signs in one location

Building Safety Signage And Risk Assessments

A building risk assessment should identify where safety signs are required and what information they need to provide. Signage should support existing safety measures, staff training and emergency procedures rather than replace them.

Regular reviews help ensure the signage remains appropriate as the building and its use change over time.

Conclusion

Building safety signage is an essential part of maintaining a safe, organised and compliant environment. From fire safety and emergency exits to hazard warnings and mandatory instructions, the right signs help protect everyone who uses the building.

By selecting suitable materials, positioning signs correctly and maintaining them regularly, businesses and organisations can improve safety awareness, support emergency procedures and create a workplace that is easier to navigate and safer for all.
