What Safety Signs Are Required by Law in the UK?

If you are responsible for a workplace, construction site, school, warehouse or residential block, you have a legal duty to keep people safe. A key part of that duty is providing clear, compliant safety signs. But which safety signs are actually required by law in the UK?

In this guide, we explain the main legal requirements, the types of safety signs you must provide, and how to make sure your signage is up to date and compliant.

The Law on Safety Signs in the UK

The main legislation covering safety signs in the UK is the Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996. These regulations require employers and those in control of premises to:

• Provide safety signs where risks cannot be removed or adequately reduced by other means
• Ensure signs are clear, easy to understand and properly maintained
• Use standardised colours and symbols so people can recognise hazards quickly

In practice, this means that if there is a significant risk that cannot be fully controlled by other measures (such as physical guards, training or safe systems of work), you must use appropriate safety signs to warn, instruct or guide people.

The Main Types of Safety Signs Required by Law

UK safety signs follow standard colours and shapes, in line with BS 5499 and ISO 7010. The main categories you are likely to need are:

1. Warning Signs (Yellow Triangles)

Warning signs highlight a specific hazard that could cause harm. They are triangular, with a black symbol on a yellow background and a black border.

Common examples include:

• Warning – High Voltage
• Warning – Forklift Trucks Operating
• Warning – Slippery Surface
• Warning – Asbestos

You are legally required to use warning signs wherever a significant hazard remains, even after you have taken reasonable steps to control the risk.

2. Mandatory Signs (Blue Circles)

Mandatory signs tell people what they must do to stay safe. They are circular, with a white symbol on a blue background.

Typical mandatory signs include:

• Safety helmets must be worn
• High visibility clothing must be worn
• Eye protection must be worn
• Fire door keep shut

Where your risk assessment identifies that specific protective equipment or actions are required, you must display the relevant mandatory signs to make this clear.

3. Prohibition Signs (Red Circles with a Diagonal Line)

Prohibition signs tell people what they must not do. They are circular with a black symbol on a white background, overlaid by a red circle and diagonal bar.

Common examples include:

• No smoking / No vaping
• No unauthorised access
• Do not use mobile phones
• Do not use lift in the event of fire

These signs are required where a particular action could create or worsen a risk, such as smoking near flammable materials or using a lift during a fire.

4. Safe Condition Signs (Green Rectangles or Squares)

Safe condition signs show safe routes, equipment or facilities. They are rectangular or square, with a white symbol on a green background.

Examples include:

• Fire exit signs and running man symbols
• First aid point / first aider
• Emergency exit – keep clear
• Assembly point

These signs are essential for guiding people to safety in an emergency and are a key part of your fire safety and first aid arrangements.

Fire Safety Signs Required by Law

Fire safety signage is a particular focus for UK regulators. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person for a building must provide adequate fire safety signs where necessary.

In most non‑domestic premises you will need:

• Fire exit signs showing escape routes and final exits
• Fire action notices explaining what to do if you discover a fire or hear the alarm
• Fire extinguisher ID signs indicating the type of extinguisher and what it can and cannot be used on
• Fire door signs such as “Fire door keep shut” or “Fire door keep locked shut”
• Assembly point signs showing where people should gather after evacuation

In higher‑risk or complex buildings, photoluminescent (glow in the dark) fire exit and fire equipment signs are often used to improve visibility in low light or smoky conditions.

Do All Workplaces Need Safety Signs?

Not every minor risk needs a sign. The law is clear that safety signs are required where:

• There is a significant risk that cannot be removed or adequately controlled by other means
• Verbal instructions or training alone are not enough
• People may be unfamiliar with the environment, such as visitors, contractors or the public

In practice, most workplaces, construction sites, warehouses, schools, care homes and residential blocks will require a range of safety signs to meet their legal duties and demonstrate good health and safety management.

How to Check If Your Safety Signs Are Compliant

To make sure your signage meets UK legal requirements, work through the following steps:

1. Review your latest risk assessments and fire risk assessment
2. Identify hazards, mandatory controls and emergency routes that need to be clearly signed
3. Check that your signs use standard colours and symbols (BS 5499 / ISO 7010)
4. Ensure signs are positioned where they are easily seen and not obscured
5. Replace any damaged, faded or outdated signs
6. Consider photoluminescent signs in areas where lighting may fail during an emergency

If you are unsure which signs you need, it is good practice to seek advice from a competent person, such as a health and safety professional or fire risk assessor.

Choosing the Right Safety Signs for Your Premises

Once you know which signs are required, you will need to choose suitable sizes and materials. For example, rigid plastic or aluminium composite signs are ideal for long‑term indoor and outdoor use, while self‑adhesive vinyl is useful for doors, machinery and smooth internal surfaces.

For fire safety and escape routes, many duty holders now choose photoluminescent (glow in the dark) signs to provide extra reassurance if normal lighting fails.

Summary

In the UK, safety signs are not optional decoration – they are a legal requirement wherever significant risks remain, particularly around fire safety, hazardous areas, mandatory PPE and emergency escape routes. By providing clear, standardised and well‑maintained signage, you help protect staff, visitors and residents, and demonstrate compliance with health and safety law.

Important Information

This guide is provided for general information only. Rainbow Safety supplies safety signage but does not provide safety, fire safety, fire risk assessment, legal or compliance advice. Nothing in this guide should be relied upon as professional advice or as confirmation that particular signage is suitable or sufficient for a specific workplace, premises or situation.

Safety signage requirements will vary depending on the workplace, premises, activities, hazards and the findings of any relevant risk assessment. The responsible person, employer or dutyholder should ensure that appropriate risk assessments are carried out and should seek advice from a competent safety professional where necessary.

Applicable legislation, standards and official guidance should always be checked when determining the safety measures and signage required for a particular workplace or premises.
