Large fire exit signs provide clear, highly visible guidance to emergency escape routes in buildings where standard-sized signs may not be easy to see. They are commonly used in large workplaces, warehouses, factories, schools, shopping centres, hospitals, leisure facilities and other buildings with long viewing distances.

By improving visibility, large fire exit signs help employees, visitors and members of the public locate the nearest safe exit quickly during an emergency evacuation.

What Are Large Fire Exit Signs?

Large fire exit signs are emergency escape route signs manufactured in larger dimensions than standard fire exit signs. They use the familiar green background with white text, directional arrows and the recognised running man symbol to clearly indicate the direction of travel towards a safe exit.

The increased size makes them easier to read from greater distances or in large open areas.

Why Use Large Fire Exit Signs?

In some buildings, standard-sized fire exit signs may not provide adequate visibility due to the size of the space or the viewing distance. Larger signs help ensure escape routes remain easy to identify, particularly where ceilings are high or large numbers of people may be evacuating.

Benefits of large fire exit signs include:

• Improved visibility over long distances
• Easier identification of escape routes
• Suitable for large open-plan buildings
• Clear guidance during emergency evacuations
• Enhanced visibility for visitors unfamiliar with the premises

Where Are Large Fire Exit Signs Used?

Large fire exit signs are suitable for a wide variety of commercial and public buildings, including:

• Warehouses and distribution centres
• Factories and manufacturing facilities
• Shopping centres and retail parks
• Sports halls and leisure centres
• Airports and transport terminals
• Schools, colleges and universities
• Hospitals and healthcare facilities
• Large office buildings
• Conference and exhibition centres

Choosing The Correct Fire Exit Arrow

Large fire exit signs are available with a range of directional arrows to guide occupants along the correct escape route.

Common options include:

• Arrow up – continue straight ahead or exit directly ahead
• Arrow left – turn left
• Arrow right – turn right
• Arrow down – exit located directly beneath the sign, often above a doorway
• Diagonal arrows – indicate escape routes that change direction

Choosing the correct arrow is essential to ensure people follow the intended evacuation route.

Where Should Large Fire Exit Signs Be Installed?

Large fire exit signs should be positioned wherever people need clear guidance towards emergency exits. Typical locations include:

• Above fire exit doors
• Along long corridors
• At junctions and changes of direction
• Within large open-plan workspaces
• Above warehouse aisles
• At stairwell entrances
• Near final exits

Signs should remain clearly visible and must not be obstructed by shelving, machinery, lighting or stored goods.

Selecting The Right Sign Size

The size of a fire exit sign should be appropriate for the viewing distance. In larger buildings, a bigger sign is often easier to recognise from across the room, helping occupants identify escape routes more quickly.

Factors to consider include:

• The maximum viewing distance
• Ceiling height
• The size of the building
• Lighting conditions
• The number of occupants

Photoluminescent Large Fire Exit Signs

Many large fire exit signs are available in photoluminescent materials that glow in the dark after exposure to natural or artificial light. These signs provide additional visibility during power failures or low-light conditions and are often used alongside emergency lighting systems.

Photoluminescent signs help occupants continue following escape routes if normal lighting is interrupted.

Maintaining Large Fire Exit Signs

Large fire exit signs should be inspected regularly to ensure they remain clean, clearly visible and securely fixed. Damaged, faded or obscured signs should be replaced promptly.

Escape route signage should also be reviewed whenever building layouts, evacuation routes or occupancy arrangements change.

Supporting Fire Evacuation Procedures

Large fire exit signs work alongside other fire safety measures, including emergency lighting, fire alarm systems, fire action notices and fire evacuation procedures. Together, these measures help ensure occupants can leave the building safely during an emergency.

Regular fire drills and staff training also help reinforce the location of escape routes and emergency exits.

Conclusion

Large fire exit signs provide clear, highly visible guidance in buildings where standard signs may be difficult to see. Their increased size makes them ideal for warehouses, factories, public buildings and other large premises where long viewing distances are common.

By selecting the correct sign size, using the appropriate directional arrows and positioning signs where they can be easily seen, businesses can improve emergency wayfinding and help ensure safe, efficient evacuations for everyone in the building.
